The Space

Before you even enter Redmayne House, you will be blown away by the charming stone facade, with sash windows and a slate roof.  Enveloped on all sides by a beautifully landscaped garden, you’ll already be choosing spots for your morning cuppa by the time you are unloading your bags. Through the front door, you will find a spacious hallway with stunning original tiles. To your left is a large dining room with an open fire, and to the right a cosy guest sitting room with a bay window and open fire – an ideal nook to tuck yourself away with a good book.  To the right of the stairs leading to the first floor, your route to the back of the house goes through the snug/study. A door straight ahead opens onto a shaker-style country kitchen that would be the envy of any TV chef… Belfast sink, multiple oven options (great for cooking for large groups) and a large square kitchen island. Off the games room, featuring a pool table – great to keep the kids entertained. Take an external door to the left and follow the path around to some french doors to discover the secluded garden room, where you will fins a hot tub, sofas and bbq overlooking a small garden. Back through the study and across the hallway is an elegant sitting room, which is the largest living area. A wood burner and enough seating for your whole group make this a great spot for a games evening. The first floor boasts four sumptuous bedrooms, all with en-suite and an additional toilet – meaning you will never need to queue for your ablutions!  Up a further staircase, you will find a further four bedrooms, all benefitting from en-suites.

About

Supremely comfortable and unaffectedly welcoming, you’ll feel so at home amongst the original tiles and stained glass that you may never want to leave… …Unless it’s to explore the wonderfully kept wall gardens and 0.48 acres that you have all to yourselves or the stunning surroundings that Redmayne House is nestled amongst. Thought to have been built in 1787, records indicate the original part of the property dates back to around 1650; Redmayne House’s quirky labyrinth-esque layout is a novel reminder of the history of the building, showing how it has evolved to suit occupants over time.  Dog friendly and nestled between three national parks, this is a hiker’s haven. We all know that the best walks end with muddy boots and pooches – a perfect time to enter through the back door and into the utility for a towel-down (dog towels provided as standard).  When it’s time to hang up your boots for a while, Kirkby Steven is steeped in history to discover and has a great selection of sights, independent shops, restaurants and bars (as well as a train station to take you to the other nearby hotspots).  After a busy day, you’ll be able to soak those sore muscles with some bubbly and bubbles in the luxurious indoor hot tub or recline in the roll-top bath.

Things To Do In Cumbria

With Redmayne House’s phenomenal location, you could fill your entire stay without getting in your car. A fantastic combination of town and country, Kirby Steven itself is steeped in history and offers a good selection of bars, restaurants, independent shops and sights to visit. It’s also home to a heritage railway station, where you can enjoy a scenic steam engine trip on the historic Carlisle – Settle line.  Local nature reserve, Smardale Gill, also offers stunning scenery with steep wooded slopes and views of open rolling countryside contrasting with the imposing viaduct. Visiting here can be combined with a longer walk that includes all four of the Eden Viaducts. Nestled at the heart of the Eden Valley, the town is between the North Pennines (with rolling hills, woodland and picturesque surroundings) the Yorkshire Dales National Park (with caves, waterfalls, iconic and historical towns and villages) and the Lake District National Park (with lakes, mountains and any number of tourist hotspots).  20 miles away is the market town of Kendal, known as the ‘gateway to the southern Lake District, and perfect for a day of shopping. From here you can easily access the popular tourist hotspots of Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere as well as take a cruise on the famous Windermere steamers. All in all, if you love the outdoors, you’re spoilt for choice!

We had a fabulous time at Redmayne House, really easy to find, the grandeur of the house really sets it a part. An ideal location for large gatherings with plenty of cosy nooks throughout the house filled with personal touches. We were really impressed by the warmth radiating throughout the house, despite the season, you’ll find there’s so much to look at you’ll be wandering around and discovering all of the historical intrigues and luxuries Redmayne has to offer. My dog loved her treats and bowls already set up for her, she made herself quite at home and launched herself into the expanse of the open rear gardens, whilst my children enjoyed the pool table and an elaborate game of hide and seek. The hot tub was a welcome addition in the summer house, my husband and I enjoyed the rare treat of peace and tranquillity in the late evening. There’s lots of convenient local restaurants and takeaways, in a quaint town. We enjoyed the local Chinese. A fantastic visit all round – we’ll be coming next year with more people in tow
