About

Bowness on Windermere is one of the most popular Lakeland destinations and Belsfield Cottage is at the heart of the lakes. A short stroll from an excellent choice of shops, cafes and restaurants, this property is the perfect place for self-catering but with some many places on the doorstep, you can easily entrust your meals to these local eateries instead. Dedicated parking means that you can leave your car at the property whilst exploring the wonders of the area via local transport, from local buses, to the Mountain Goat tour company to the various steamers that occupy the lake. A wealth of independent shops, boutiques, cafes and superb international cuisine restaurants are all found within a short stroll from the cottage. Lake Windermere itself features regular boat trips to Ambleside and Lakeside, the latter featuring the Lakes Aquarium, which is a fantastic day out. From here, you can also take a steam train along the Lakeside-Haverthwaite railway, or for more energetic visitors, rowing boats are available on the lake.  Windermere town features a traditional cinema and World of Beatrix Potter attraction, a must-see for tourists.  Walkers can enjoy access to a variety of walks from Bowness, from gentle strolls to the more strenuous hike to the peaceful valley of Kentmere, where the landscape and surroundings are second to none.

Things To Do In Windermere

Windermere is England’s largest lake and the surrounding area is packed with loads to do. The locality of the lake consists of many beautiful towns and villages. Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the most bustling towns in the Lake District. The busy pier is the point of embarkation for wonderful lake cruises and ferries to Hawkshead. There’s also art galleries, antique stores and many cafes in the town. Ambleside is a picturesque town in the Rothay valley, situated a mile from the northern tip of the lake. A hiking hotspot, Ambleside’s access to the lake is through the adorable village of Waterhead. Featuring waterside cafes, cosy shops and tranquil walking paths, this little hamlet is one of the best places to visit in Windermere. The southern point for Lake Windermere is the small village of Lakeside. It features charming inns and restaurants, the Lakes Aquarium and the Haverthwaite railway station for the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Newby Bridge is a quaint village that straddles the River Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere. It’s just south of Foot Fell Park and is a stop along the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. To fully appreciate all that Lake Windermere has to offer, a lake cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Cumbria. It is an extremely relaxing way to enjoy the area’s stunning mountains. Leaving from Bowness, there are two types of cruises. The 45-minute cruise in a modern sightseeing watercraft that takes a circular path around the lake’s 18 wooded islands.  Alternatively, there are also 90-minute cruises that travel from Bowness to Lakeside and then back again. This cruise is on an old-fashioned steamer ship that has allocated seating. Both cruises offer commentary on the lake’s history and points of interest. Windermere town features a range of shops and eateries, as well as a traditional cinema and The World Of Beatrix Potter attraction within minutes of the cottage door.
